In this video, we break down exactly which instruments to listen for, and how each one signals beat 1. Key instruments to listen for: 🎹 Piano & Bass – The easiest method. The piano loops an 8-beat montuno — when the phrase restarts, that's beat 1. The bass creates a powerful "vacuum" by landing heavily on beat 4 and staying silent on beat 1, making the arrival feel unmistakable. 🥁 The Drums – The timbales crash on beat 1 to signal new sections (the abanico roll). The congas play double hits on the 8-and count as a "runway" into beat 1. The bongo bell lands its heaviest hit on beats 1, 3, 5, and 7. 🪵 The Clave – In a 3-2 clave, the first strike falls on beat 1. Once you can hear the clave, you'll never lose your timing. 🪇 Hand Percussion – The güiro's long scrape starts on the strong beats — listen for a long scratch after a short pause to find beat 1.
