The scene here is smaller, which means less anonymity, more community, and teachers who actually remember your name after week two. Salsa Madras has been building that scene in Graz with structured beginner courses, weekly socials, and Ritmo Madras — a special Saturday event held monthly or bi-monthly that brings extra energy (and sometimes visiting dancers) into the regular weekly rhythm.

What Style of Salsa Will You Learn?

This trips up a lot of newcomers. There are two broad families:

• Salsa ON1 and ON2 — both linear styles, danced in a slot (back and forth), differing in which beat you break on

• Cuban Salsa — a completely separate circular style, danced more around a central point

These are not interchangeable, and a good studio will tell you clearly which one you're learning. Salsa Madras Graz teaches the linear style, which is also what you'll find at most international socials and festivals — useful if you ever want to dance while traveling.

What Actually Happens in a Beginner Course

A real beginner course is not a single workshop. It's a progression — typically 15 sessions, building from basic step and timing, through partner connection, to your first social-floor-ready combinations. By the end, you're not just memorizing patterns; you can actually respond to a partner on a crowded floor.

The upcoming Graz season for Salsa ON2 beginners starts 7 October 2026, running through 28 January 2027 (with a two-week Christmas break). This is currently the active beginner course at Salsa Madras Graz — Bachata and Kizomba are on the roadmap but not yet running as regular classes.

What to Wear, What to Expect, Who Shows Up

Comfortable shoes with some slide to them (sneakers grip too much), clothes you can move in, and an open mind. Most beginner rooms are a genuine mix — students, professionals, people new to Graz, people who've lived here forever. Nobody is watching you fail; everyone in the room was a beginner at some point too.
